Khajuraho Temples Tour

Khajuraho is located the heart of central Indian, in the state of Madhya Pradesh, chattarpur district, about 385 miles southeast of Delhi, the capital of India. Khajuraho list of monuments has been listed as the UNESCO world heritage site. Khajuraho consists of the largest group of medieval Hindu and Jain famous temples, famous for their erotic sculptures.

HISTORY

The temples of Khajuraho are the perfect examples of architectural geniuses, during the times of chandela dynasty, a hindu dynasty that ruled this part of the country from the 10th to 12th centuries. The Khajuraho temples were built over a span of 200 years. There were originally 80 temples, of which only 25 survived the rough weather conditions over long years of time.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Travelers come from far and wide to see the world famous temples of Khajuraho. The temples are all there to see, but you don't need much more than these magnificent monuments to god, as you try and absorb man's artistic ability and artistic sense. They breathe life into mere slabs of stones.

The carvings depicts a variety of moods of every aspect of the human life-from mundane to sublime, and has carved images of god and goddess, 'apsaras', animals, frozen in stone due to its artistic brilliance.

KHAJURAHO TEMPLES

The temples at Khajuraho are divided into three main categories- the western group, the eastern group and the southern group.

The Western Group: The temples in the Western group are very large and decorated beautifully. They display the wealth of the erstwhile rulers. These temples are dedicated either to Lord Vishnu or to Lord Shiva. You will find the most charming Lakshmana Temple in this complex. It is called the seat of Vishnu as Vaikuntham. Next you will see Kendriya Mahadeva Temple, the most harmonious temple built in 1030 AD built by King Vidyadhara to rejoice at the victory on Mahmud of Ghazni. To the north of Kendriya Mahadeva, there is Devi Jagdamba Temple which was originally dedicated to Vishnu. Next to see the Chandragupta Temple, the only temple of Sun God. Come to the east and there is Parvati Temple, a small shrine dedicated to Vishnu.

The Eastern Group: The eastern group of temples is classified into two categories. The first group falls near the Old Khajuraho Village and the second falls behind the school at the back of the village. The temples in Eastern Group are Ghantai Temple, the Vamana Temple - enshrined with a vamana (vehicle of God) or Vishnu, Javeri temple - dedicated to Vishnu and Brahma Temple housing a four faced lingam of Shiva. Then there is Jain temples constructed and maintained by Digambara Cult. Visit the Temple of Adinath and Shantinath Temple.

The Southern Group: You will find two temples in this region. The one dedicated to Lord Shiva called Duladeva Temple, and the other dedicated to Lord Vishnu called the Chaturbhuj Temple.
